For this assessment over the past few weeks I worked with Kev, a driver trainer from Easy As Driving School to create a game for younger audiences to play and enjoy. This game involves a car racing around a track to collect all of the coins in its path to finish the level, but watch out for the bouncing tyre and dropping spider or else you will loose points!
The question procedure was very successful in the sense that Kev provided me with all of the answers to the questions I had asked to help me prepare the game and envision it as I reviewed his answers. He was a great client. The question's asked focused on the appearance of the game to be able to understand what he wanted and incorprate it into the proposal ideas and the demographics (audience) it would reach were questioned as this will further aid in the look and style of the game.
The first initial question asked to Kev was 'What is the name of your company and what do you produce?' This was a great starting question to ask as it helps develop an idea of what type of game we were going to produce from the get go. He went on to explain his job as a driving instructor for Easy as, which helps "..learner driver's achieve their hours to be able to pass their provisional license exam." A following question of ‘Who is the target audience of the game?' informed me on what the type of game should look like in terms of graphics, which is generally cartoonish for younger kids and more realistic for the older ages. He stated that younger generations were more likely to play it, as he referred to the production as a computer game, giving them more access to the game. The way we are going to incorporate the existing company's (EasyAs Driving School) was asked as this will be there branding to promote their company to the audience.
An email was sent to the client containing the first initial propoasal which stated:
Hi Kev,
As the first thing that will appear on the gaming screen will be the Sunny Media logo animation, I wonder if a cool animation could be added to your logo to make it appear afterwards. The start screen will involve an instructions button when if clicked will take the user to a separate instructions page showing what the player to be careful of and the aim of the game. The main menu will also of course have a large start button which will entail how to start the game using a function key on the keyboard. Both of our logos displayed on the top left and bottom left corners for copyright requirements. The layout of each level will comprise of a solid green background to signify grass, the track laid on top and round the left ‘L’ of the screen, a barricade will be in place to indicate the edge of the course with both our companies logos and further advertisements on the edge with a score tab along the bottom of it. I propose that we turn this game into a computer game controlled by the arrow keys. The game will mostly be classified as a game of entertainment purposes. This will entail cartoon like graphics with a car starting on a track and making themselves around the course, collecting the animated coins to be able to complete the level. The player will need to collect a certain amount of coins to progress to the next level, failure to do so but still crossing the finish line will result in having to restart the level. Whilst the player is ‘driving’, tyres will be bouncing around in the level as well as a spider dropping every x seconds to make the level both harder and more enjoyable as it won’t be too easy. In the event of the player attempting to cut through the course, barriers with your companies colours will be used for if the player runs into it, they will have to restart the level. As the game progresses and the levels will get more intricate by changing the track layout. As the car is moving throughout the levels, car engine noises will be used to indicate to the player that the car is on and moving, this will begin as soon as the level starts. Upbeat/bouncy elevator music should be advised to play from the start screen, throughout the game to further add the element of fun. As the player reaches the end of a level a short sound of victory/celebration will play to keep the player intrigued and wanting to keep playing.

Hey Taylor, I love your idea and reminds me of the retro games I used to play growing up! Do whatever you wish, it’s your baby. Can’t wait to show my kids when it’s finished. Keep me posted on how you’re progressing throughout the assignment. See you on the next drive, Kev
Hi Taylor,
1. Summary: Not done. Think of this like the introduction to an essay. It needs to sum everything else up more effectively.
2. Questions: You’ve made a start in turning the questions and answers into paragraphs. I’d like you to look at:
a. Some examples of questions which worked well (gave you good information) and gave you design ideas
b. Some examples of questions which didn’t work well
c. A description of how you developed your ideas from these questions
3. Proposal: Get rid of the placeholder images at the top! Overall, you have some good information here, but it needs to be structured in a more logical way (use a paragraph per section) and to be clearer as to what the game actually is, plus have the feedback from the client in a separate paragraph as well.
4. Game: No logo animation yet. Very little done, and it doesn’t match up with your proposal very well yet!
An enormous amount to do here, Taylor! I think you’ll need to come in next Monday to finish it off.
Simon Watson
To improve the game from the draft, I added more components such as enemies, a logo animation displaying when the game is opened, a main menu / instructions / you failed / you win screens with both the companies logos on each layout to signify that we made it as well as advertising both parties.
